MIA Bowcott, aged five, recently took part in a Balanceability course at the Hill Centre in Upton on Severn, and within just a few weeks she was pedalling away without stabilisers.

The courses, set up by Malvern Hills District Council, offer children the opportunity to develop the essential skills needed to be able to ride a bike at an early age, whilst having fun on a balance bike.

Balanceability is the UK’s first and only accredited learn to cycle programme, which involves a schedule of fun activities that build confidence, spatial awareness and balance skills, enabling young children to cycle without ever needing stabilisers.

Mia’s dad Adrian Bowcott said: “We are so pleased Mia can now ride her bike, it didn’t take long at all. After the Balanceability lesson, Mia took away the skills she needed to practice at home.

"Within just a few weeks Mia was able to ride her bike. Everything just fell into place, she just picked up the bike, pushed herself off and started pedalling, I was amazed, and it really does work.”

Rachel Vann, the council's Balanceability teacher, said: “Mia’s achievement is wonderful, and it is so lovely to see she now has the confidence and skills to ride a bike without stabilisers.”

Courses take place at Upton Hill Centre and Sport Dyson Perrins and cost £5 per child per session. Visit malvernhills.gov.uk/balanceability to find out dates and booking details.
