A FASCINATING read at a National Trust shop is giving an insight into over six decades of life working on a country estate, near Pershore.

Malcolm Walford, celebrating 64 years working at Croome, will be signing his book which tells his life story.

Mr Walford's memoirs, “My Life on the Croome Estate”, spans his time working at Croome.

His story starts when he moved to Wadborough, near Pershore, from Wolverhampton. He joined the estate at 20 years old as a bricklayer’s labourer.  Later he worked at RAF Defford, where he was to meet his future wife Mary, and then joined the team on the Croome estate.

The book is filled with fascinating anecdotes about life at Croome up to the late 1990s.

“On 24 August, I shall be celebrating 64 years of service,” said Malcolm.“I now volunteer in the church in Croome’s grounds most Saturdays and being able to share my memories about the church, the Coventry family and my time on the estate is wonderful," said Mr Walford.  "I remember when I started as a bricklayer’s labourer, all the work was carried out by hand – the digging of the septic tanks, cleaning out the cottage wells to shovelling snow off roofs.”

Tina King, Croome’s retail manager said: “We are really happy to be promoting Malcolm’s book.”

“He has so many memories of working on the Croome estate so it’s wonderful that people can share this experience through his fascinating memoirs.”

Croome’s shop will be hosting the book signing for ‘My Life on the Croome Estate’ where Visitors can chat to Mr Walford about his book at his book signing at Croome's shop on Sunday, June 18 between 2pm-4pm
