A MAJOR exhibition showcasing the work of leading artist John Piper opens in Malvern on Saturday.

John Piper is one of the major figures of 20th century British art whose use of colour and texture can be seen in work ranging from art and printmaking to ceramics, fabrics and the stained glass at Coventry Cathedral.

His work is currently enjoying a real renaissance and the exhibition at Elmslie House, Avenue Road, is the largest held in the Midlands.

The collection has been brought together by art expert Richard Turkington, and includes over 50 limited-edition prints, fabric designs and other works by Piper, all of which are for sale.

Paintings by Jamie Cramp, whose contemporary work is strongly influenced by John Piper, are also on show

The exhibition is free and will run until Sunday, May 28, woth Dr Turkington on hand throughout the week to share his passion for Piper’s work.

He said: "John Piper’s reputation and the value of his work are continuing to grow. He worked extensively across the Midlands and Wales, and visitors will recognise many of the locations he used."

Anna Taylor of Elmslie House said: “Elmslie House is delighted to be hosting such a prestigious exhibition which falls on the 25th anniversary of Piper’s death. It’s also great to have the work of local artist Jamie Cramp return to the house; Piper being such a clear influence, I’m sure Jamie’s work will be extremely complementary to the exhibition as a whole."
