PLANS to convert an old retail unit into a tattoo studio have been met with a mixed response.

Some locals have opposed Paul Kemp’s plans to open Rat-Tattoo-Ee in Old Street, Upton.

One resident, who objected to the project, wrote: “Not ideal or very pretty for a lovely small town.

“I think it gives off the wrong impression, especially when it’s straight on the hight street.”

Mr Kemp, aged 45, of Blandford Close, Welland, near Malvern, said: “I understand people’s concerns but I am a professional artist and wish to bring my skills and passion to the town that we feel comfortable in.

“I have been an artist for many years and went to art college as part of my dream which is culminating in opening my own studio.

“We live close to Upton and often visit its restaurants and pubs, and love its festivals.”

Paula Jenner, of Upton, said: “Fabulous for those that like tattoos, fabulous for those who don’t, as it will open up a shop! Good luck to them.”

Laura West added: "Well done to whoever is taking on the new venture. Something new to add to Upton’s favour... after all people travel for a good tattooist!"
