SPEEDING drivers across Malvern could face a day in court following a day of police action which found several motorists flouting the law.

Malvern police officers from both the patrol and safer neighbourhood teams have been performing speed checks in Hanley Swan, Hanley Broadheath, Powick, Callow End and Leigh Sinton as part of an ongoing mission to eduate drivers.

During the first 90 minutes of police activity in Leigh Sinton Road 14 drivers were spoken to and were deemed suitable for education regarding their speed. One driver was reported for excess speed, a second driver was reported for an MOT offence and a third driver was reported for driving whilst using a mobile phone.

When a driver is reported for consideration it usually means an appearance at court or a driver education programme if the motorist is deemed suitable.

This would include drivers who have not previously been offered the course and those whose speed was not so high that the offer of the course would be inappropriate.

Upon conviction drivers who use their mobile phone while driving face six penalty points (up from three previously) and a £200 fine after new, more stringent penalties came into force on March 1.

Sgt Alex Denny of the Malvern Safer Neighbourhood Team said the aim was to make the roads as safe as possible for the local communities after concerns were raised.

He said: "A wide variety of activity is conducted on a daily basis, this includes speed enforcement and education which takes place at locations identified through the local community as areas of concern.

"This pro-active and consistent activity by Malvern officers ensures our road networks are suitably policed and that moving traffic offences that contribute to road incidents are reduced as well as discouraging travelling criminality.

"We also work pro-actively alongside our partners such as the Community Safety Partnership and the Safer Roads Partnership to make sure that we are all working effectively together.

"By working together with our partners we are able to tackle a wider array of issues such as the illegal carriage of trade waste and fly tipping."

The public is urged to contact Safer Roads Partnership if they have concerns over road safety in their communities. They can follow Malvern police on Twitter (@MalvernCops).
