HEDGEHOG friendly school pupils have been raising money for a charity which cares for sick and injured animals.

Students from Northleigh CE Primary School in St Peter's Road, Malvern, held a bake sale and raised £33 for Malvern Hedgehog Rescue.

The charity, which cares for sick and injured hogs, is urging residents to be on the look out for the animals as they are just coming out of hibernation.

Viv Smith, of Malvern Hedgehog Rescue, said: "Please leave some cat biscuits and fresh drinking water on the ground. They will be very thirsty and hungry.

"Some may be in poor condition after their winter sleep. Any hog seen out in day or appearing unwell will need to be checked.

"Any hogs lying flat will need urgent rescue as will a hog seen limping or wobbling.

"A hog with wheezy breathing or heard coughing will need urgent attention."

She also called for residents to ensure hogs can escape from garden ponds, and anyone gardening should take care not to injure an animal.

Residents who spot unwell hogs should put them in a container and cover with a towel, before advice is sought.
