A KIND four-year-old girl is undertaking a sponsored bike ride to buy new toys for a hospital after hearing there was a shortage.

Paige Ledington, of Elgar Avenue, Malvern, will ride 2.2 miles on her bike on Thursday, April 20 so she can buy new toys for kids at Birmingham Children's Hospital.

She organised the ride after her auntie told her there was a shortage of toys at the hospital.

It will be the longest ride she has undertaken as she has never cycled more than a mile.

Charlie Ledington, Paige's mum, aged 27, said: "Her doll broke and she wanted a new one and then thought she could get toys for others.

"My sister works at Birmingham Children's Hospital as a ward sister and on her ward they have all had open heart surgery.

"They are in there for a long time and don't have many toys. When Paige said she wanted toys for other children my sister was here."

The mother-of-four said her sister, Rachel Grey, told Paige the babies in her ward would appreciate the toys.

Her mum then suggested that she could raise money for the items through a sponsored walk or swim.

"I said she could then buy new toys instead of giving all of her toys away," she said.

"Then she said 'I can go out on my bike, I can go really far'."

Paige has been cycling around her neighbourhood to collect donations with her mum, and they have exceeded their £200 fund-raising target.

Half of the money will pay for projectors in the hospital ward and the other half will be used to buy items from Toys R Us.

The four-year-old will ride to Matalan, in Roman Way, Malvern, where her grandfather works, and then ride back home again.

Her mother will be walking next to her during the ride.

She got a bicycle for her last birthday and has been riding it regularly because of the warm weather, but the sponsored ride is her biggest challenge yet as she has not cycled more than a mile before.

Anyone who wants to donate can do so here.
