A UNION official has compared a one per cent pay rise for NHS workers with an April Fools’ Day prank.

Bryn Griffiths, of Worcester Trades Union Council, said that he was not amused by the increase which was announced on Tuesday, March 28.

Government ministers have accepted the rise, which was recommended by pay review bodies and comes into effect on Saturday, April 1.

Mr Griffiths said: “We are saying ‘what is this government doing?’ April Fools’ Day just happens to be the day they are putting this pay up.

“It is a joke. This rise of one per cent is derisory. It’s one per cent below inflation. Personal credit has also increased, people are resorting to it to fund the gap.

“NHS pay has been held back for years, this is not a one-off.”

About 1.3 million NHS workers will receive the pay rise.

A Department of Health spokesman said: "The dedication and sheer hard work of our NHS staff is absolutely crucial to delivering world-class care for patients.

"We are pleased to announce that all NHS staff will receive a 1% pay increase."

Worcester Trades Union Council coordinates unions in the area and campaigns against government cuts.
