A SCULPTOR is delighted with the popularity of his work at the biggest exhibition yet in his hometown.

Ed Elliott, aged 31, is displaying six wooden carvings at Malvern Theatres, in Grange Road, for the whole of March.

The display includes a large angel sculpture in the middle of the theatre's foyer and five other carvings by the stairs.

"The theatre has said it's been very popular. It commands the space when people walk in," Mr Elliott said.

"There were a couple that came to find me at my workshop near Ledbury after seeing the work at the theatre."

Mr Elliott said he was delighted to bring his angel sculpture, which has been seen nationwide, back to his hometown of Malvern.

"Greer [the angel sculpture] is a character, part of an ongoing series of work, exploring tensions held within the concepts of the angel," he said.

"Replacing primary limbs with wings significantly changes the ideology of this mythical symbol.

"The notion of existing as an angel becomes somewhat of an irreversible, immortal burden.

"The work hosts an athletic physique, realistically required for a bird-like character of this proportion.

"This androgynous, winged being explores the paradox between power and beauty, solidity and weightlessness, creating an ambivalent narrative to the form."

A spokesman for Mr Elliott said: "This will be the first time a piece of Ed's work of this scale has been on public display in Worcestershire!

"This exhibition is a celebration of the last five years of his sculpture practice and becoming one of the nation's leading sculptors working with wood."

This is the second time Mr Elliott has held an exhibition in Malvern, after first displaying at Elmslie House in October 2016.

The exhibition is free but all of the pieces are for sale and can be bought through the artist or by enquiring with a member of staff at Malvern Theatres.

Mr Elliott went to The Chase School, in Geraldine Road, Malvern, before studying fine art and sculpture in Cardiff.
