BOOKWORMS across Worcestershire will be dressing up as the characters from their favourite stories as the popular World Book Day returns for its 20th anniversary.

The annual event will be held on Thursday, March 2 and celebrates authors and illustrators.

Among those taking part this year are pupils from St Clement's Primary School in Worcester who gave Worcester News readers a sneak preview of some of their costumes.

The pupils are invited to return to school after lessons end on Thursday dressed either in their pyjamas or as their favourite character for a special storytime.

This year they've also been challenged with a sponsored read to help raise money for an outdoor book nook and asked to bring in pictures of them reading that are linked to their chosen book.

Tracy Bagg, from the school, said: "We have a very passionate literacy co-ordinator who is keen to organise a reading hut.

"We are raising money to get an outdoor book nook into the school grounds so children have got somewhere different, exciting and quiet to read outside of lessons."

As part of World Book Day, children will receive book tokens they can swap for their own books.

The event is designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
