MALVERN Hills residents are being urged to nominate their litter hot spots at the district council prepare to take part in the Great British Spring Clean.

The national campaign aims to bring communities together to clean up litter in their area and organisers hope to inspire 500,000 people to take part.

It follows on from last year’s Clean for the Queen campaign in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday, which saw residents, staff and councillors join forces to clean up parts of Malvern Hills blighted by litter. In total some 200 bags of rubbish were picked up.

This time the council will once again be sending out its litter hit squads to help keep the area clean, on top of the council’s usual litter-picking activities.

Residents can nominate grot spots they would like the team to tackle by posting suggestions on council's Facebook page, tweeting them to @MalvernHills_DC or emailing claire.vaughan@malvernhills.gov.uk.

Equipment is also available to loan to local community groups who would like to conduct their own litter picks as part of the Great British Spring Clean. Anyone interested should contact streetscene@malvernhills.gov.uk.

Cllr Bronwen Behan, portfolio holder for the environment at the council, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Great British Spring Clean. Unfortunately litter remains a problem across the country, causing harm to the environment and wildlife, with councils in England having to spend over £700 million on street cleaning services every year.

“The campaign offers people the chance to meet new people, get out and about in the fresh air, and make a positive impact on the environment. We encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations as possible to take part and do their bit to help."
