A NEW service for older people that was launched by Community Action Malvern and District last autumn is already proving a success.

The scheme, called Helping Hands, was founded in September to help out older people in their own homes with jobs that may have become too difficult for them.

Since the launch, volunteers have been recruited and have been busy visiting clients. They are able to help with shopping and housework or smaller tasks such as changing light bulbs. These are jobs that older people can find so difficult and yet, they make such a difference to their lives.

Phyllis Gillon has been using the service since it started and is delighted with the help she has received so far. About once a fortnight, Brenda Stokes, one of the Helping Hands volunteers, visits to do general light housework and other bits and bobs that Phyllis finds difficult to do herself.

“Brenda has been such a help and, now she has been a few times, we also enjoy a chat.” said Mrs Gillon. “I just telephone Community Action when I feel I need a bit of extra help and they arrange for someone to come down that week. It’s good because I don’t need to commit to having somebody every week which suits me just fine.”

Helping Hands is just one of the services that Community Action provides.

Others include the Shoparound service that runs weekly trips to places such as Tewkesbury, Pershore, Upton, the Hop Pocket and Evesham Country Park, allowing those who are unable to get out very often the chance to socialise, do some shopping and get some fresh air.

There is also a Sunday tea club, specifically for older people who may find themselves alone and lonely on Sundays.

If you know anyone who would benefit from these services, call Community Action on 01684 892381. People who want to volunteer should call the same number.
