A HOMEOWNER hopes to clear up the tonnes of debris which fell into a road after his garden wall collapsed.

Malcolm Robson, 57, thinks around 20 tonnes of earth slipped down his garden and into Eaton Road, Malvern Wells, as a result of the incident.

Two sections of the retaining wall fell down on Monday evening and another part broke on Wednesday night, knocking a street lamp into the road.

The resident does not know what caused the incident but intends to have the road cleared next week.

Highways have closed the street but cannot move the debris as this is the responsibility of the homeowner.

Mr Robson, who has lived in the house for three years, said: "I heard it collapse at 11.20pm and I thought that a car had crashed.

"Then I went outside and thought 'I can't see the top of the wall'."

Mr Robson said he then realised the wall had collapsed and called the police, who contacted Highways.

"I stood out there to make sure no drivers used the road," he said.

"I was slightly upset but it is what it is. It's going to cost a few pounds to say the least.

"It' still dangerous so people would be well advised to stay away. The footpath and road are closed.

"I have got a stonemason assessing the road and making it safe. I am waiting for him to get back to me. It should be cleared next week."

Mr Robson, who grew up in Malvern and is now semi-retired, said he wants to preserve the broken Malvern stone so that he can rebuild the wall.

The wall retained earth on a level space, which was created when the garden was first made 100-years-ago, according to Mr Robson.

The collapse of Mr Robson's wall coincided with another retaining wall falling down at St Kenelm's Church, in Upton Snodsbury, near Worcester, on Monday morning.
