A VETERAN of Malvern Town Council has handed in his resignation, saying the authority is suffering from "a serious trust deficit".

Cllr Mike Charles, who represents the Dyson Perrins ward, said that the recent increase in the town council's precept, which was decided at last month's full council meeting, precipitated his decision to resign.

He said: "Look out ratepayers for another increase this year in the council precept, this for the third year running. Not two per cent this time, more like five-plus per cent.

"Over the last couple of years I have seen a number of decisions taken by the town council that in my opinion have been detrimental to the lives and well-being of local people.

"Rather than listening to residents, the town council has become increasingly high-handed, insular and defensive. A bunker mentality has arisen to such an extent that those that voice legitimate concerns are deemed suspect or even viewed as the enemy. Such an atmosphere of suspicion and recrimination has resulted in an erosion of trust,

"I freely admit that I have been robust in articulating my concerns, and if I have offended anyone’s sensitivities I apologise. Regrettably, the town council appears utterly incapable of acknowledging its errors and so is beginning to suffer from a serious trust deficit.

"I for my part have tried to effect positive change. I have asked searching questions, and challenged those who feel that it is perfectly acceptable to be profligate with other people’s money.

"Transparency is a vital part of democracy and I for one believe that it is not the job of councillors or council officers to try and make decisions ever more opaque."

Malvern mayor, Cllr Cynthia Palmer, said: "It's always sad when a councillor resigns, but I think he has made some unfair comments, and that's all I want to say for now."
