PUPILS and staff at Malvern St James Girls' School enjoyed a visit from special four-legged guests.

A team from the charity Guide Dogs brought Taylor, Quaver and six-month-old puppy Nellie to meet students and raise awareness about their work.

After an assembly, the dogs and the Guide Dogs staff worked with girls from the Prep Department to show them what it is like to be blind or partially sighted.

Activities included pouring water blindfolded and attempting to read Braille.

Marina Stentiford, head of MSJ’s preparatory department, said: "The guide dogs not only showed their owners a clear path, they also made it easier for our girls to see what hard work, training and a willingness to help others can achieve.

"The training and dedication shown by both dogs and handlers proved to be inspirational for those listening. More than one of our girls was later reflecting on how they could excel when helping others and themselves.

"An enjoyable and entertainingly engaging morning; I am extremely grateful to the volunteers who took time out of their day to visit us."

Sophie Earp, in year 2, said: "They made me know we can help people,” while Beth Mico in year 1 said: "I liked the guide dogs because I liked playing with them and stroking them."

Alice Bond, a year 2 pupil, added: "They were beautiful and I learnt that they slipped on wooden floors," while Nancy Sefton - also in year 2 - said: "It was lovely and fantastic."
