YOUNG readers have been rewarded for completing the Summer Reading Challenge in record numbers.

Councillors Rosemary Webb and Peter Webb presented the children with their medals at Upton Library, in Malvern, on Saturday, October 15.

Angela Haywood, who is head librarian at Upton Library, said: "We all enjoyed Saturday very much and it was certainly a very successful event."

Cllr Peter Webb said: "The children of Upton have increased the number reaching reading medal standard year on year, this year reaching 29 medals.

"This illustrates the need for libraries in local communities they act as focal points for the children and encourage them to expand their horizons.

"This year the set author was Roald Dahl and when asked so many children came up with different titles as their favourites."

Children have to read six books to complete the Summer Reading Challenge, which takes place every year with the support of libraries across the country.
