THE President welcomed visitors and speaker, gave out cards to the birthday girls, the minutes of the last meeting read, and financial report given, also Worcestershire Federation of Women’s Institute correspondence reminding members of future events, such as, ‘Talk for the Terrified’ or outing to Bristol ‘Shop until you Drop’. The Speaker, Charlie Homer from St Richard’s Hospice outlined the organization behind the smooth running of the Worcestershire Hospice for thirty-two years of free service. Fundraising and volunteers being very important to maintain the high standard of care given by medical and nursing professionals.

Volunteers say “we focus on the patient, we get to know patients as individuals, it is a privilege to work with a great team of caring people.” Service for the patient’s comfort beyond medical care are outstanding, offering Hydrotherapy, Chiropody, Hairdresser, Complimentary Therapy, support to families, opportunity for pets too live-in or visit and ‘all faith’ Chaplaincy, to tempt those patients who have lost their appetite a bespoke menu is offered in consultation with the in-house Chef, who incidentally volunteers cooking lessons to those wishing to learn.

The Hospice offer Day Care working with Worcester Royal Hospital specialist clinics, the National Health Service provide 23% of the budget, volunteers’ work saves about one million pounds, with a need still to raise the £84 million to maintain palliative care that meets the patients physical, emotional and spiritual needs into the future. www.strichards.org.uk
