FIREFIGHTERS evacuated a herd of cattle from their shed, after 150 tonnes of straw went up in flames nearby.

Fire crews took the cows out of the shed because of the 25m by 10m blaze raging in the open field.

The fire, in Pinvin, near Pershore, was reported at just before 12.30pm and around 80 tonnes of straw has already burnt.

A fire appliance from Pershore and another from Droitwich were sent to the field, off Upton Snodsbury Road.

Firefighters are using two hose reel jets and a covering jet to douse the bales of straw.

A water carrier has also been sent from Evesham to help extinguish the straw, which is well alight.

The fire service expects the blaze to continue for another six hours and is using mechanical machinery to drag out out and dump down the straw.

Fire trucks attending the scene were advised to be careful due to roaming cattle in the field.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a large straw field on fire in Pinvin shortly after 1pm.

"However our attendance was requested purely in a traffic management capacity and the incident is not being treated as arson at this time."

There has been no indication of injuries.
