WORLD pool champion Shaun Chipperfield helped raise £1,220.23 for charity at a tournament held in memory of a Worcester pool player.

The pool tournament raised funds for St Richard’s Hospice at took place on August 27 in The Maple Leaf pub.

European champion Karl Sutton also attended the event, which was organised after Nigel Vickerman lost his two year battle with colon cancer.

Another £720.46 was raised in donations, with proceeds going towards St Richard’s Hospice and the MS Therapy Centre in Gloucester.

Mr Vickerman, who lived in Kempsey, played pool at a national and county level but died aged 53 on August 4.

Fran Webb, Mr Vickerman’s sister-in-law, said ‘Nige’ would be sadly missed by all who knew him.

“He was a much loved, popular and respected member of the Worcester Pool League,” she said.

“He inspired friends and colleagues to such an extent that the St John’s Pool League and Worcester Singles Pool League have organised competitions.

“The winner of the singles competition will receive one of Mr Vickerman’s trophies donated by his partner Dee Dawson.

“The various competitions will continue annually in his memory with proceeds going to St Richard’s Hospice.”

Dee Dawson, Nigel's partner, said: "I'm just humbled how everyone has raised so much money for him, I can't believe how much.

"My whole family are indebted to them for all they are doing for his memory.

"They are donating their prize money and doing so much work. Riley's snooker centre events are ongoing in memory of Nigel.

"He has hundreds of trophies over the years. I have donated trophies that they will keep using."

The competitions have already raised more than £350 since they began earlier this month.

The landlords of The Maple Leaf, in St John’s, part funded the event, which also included a raffle and auction.
