A MAN vandalised a police cell while he was kept in custody for an offence of which he was later cleared, a court was told.

Simon Byrne, 32, of Woodmans Way, Droitwich, admitted inscribing 'Simon Byrne 2016' on the door of his police cell when he appeared at Worcester Magistrates Court on Friday, July 22.

Angla (correct) Hallan, prosecuting, said Byrne was in police custody for a total of 18 hours on March 28 this year.

"When the police went to check the cell, they saw that 'Simon Byrne 2016' had been inscribed on the inside of the door and the left hand side of the door had been picked," she said.

"When police interviewed him he said he regretted it, putting it down to boredom and his ADHD."

Rob Macrory, defending, said: "He admits it was a stupid, immature action.

"He was in police custody for 18 hours after his name was put forward for a crime by someone who does not like him, with no other evidence."

Byrne admitted a charge of criminal damage and was ordered to pay West Mercia Police £100 in compensation and £50 costs.
