WORRIED parents desperate to inoculate children against meningitis B can now access private supplies of the vaccine Bexsero made by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

The jab was unavailable for the first half of the year due to global demand although the NHS programme for new born babies and toddlers up to the ago f one was not affected.

In February 2016 two-year-old Faye Burdett, died in a London hospital after fighting the disease for 11 days.

Following the sad news of her death, demand for the vaccine outstripped supply when parents rushes to inoculate their children over a year old.

Health and beauty chain Superdrug says Bexsero is now back in stock in Nurse Clinics and selected pharmacy stores in England, Scotland and Wales.

The firm says the in-store vaccination service priced at £95 per dose is suitable for patients aged between two months and 50 years and, depending on age, two or three doses are recommended.

It adds, children under the age of one should be able to receive the vaccination free from the NHS and it is advised that parents contact their GP if they believe their child is eligible.

In the UK every year there are approximately 1,500 reported cases of meningococcal disease, making it the most common cause of bacterial meningitis.

Symptoms include a high fever with cold hands and feet, confusion, vomiting and headaches, but with early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment, most people will make a full recovery.

The meningitis B vaccination could provide protection for nearly 90 per cent of infection strains in England and Wales. It is vital to seek early treatment to prevent possible irreparable damage to the brain and further severe long-term consequences.

Anyone who thinks they or someone they know is displaying symptoms of meningitis, they are advised to seek medical help immediately at their nearest hospital.

Dr Pixie McKenna, Superdrug’s health and wellbeing ambassador, said: “Any doctor who has dealt with a case of meningococcal meningitis during their career will tell you how harrowing it is. The image stays with you forever.

“As a parent and a healthcare professional, meningitis is one of my greatest fears. Thankfully we have now a vaccine to protect against one of the most deadly forms, meningitis B.

“This strain is responsible for nearly 90 per cent of meningitis infections in young children – 10 per cent of those infected don't survive and those who do can be left with life-limiting disability. Vaccination is key in stopping this disease.”

Nicola Hart, head of healthcare services at Superdrug, added: “The high demand for the vaccine reflects the importance parents have placed on protecting their children from meningitis B so we are really happy we are now able to offer the vaccination to our customers again”.
