A NEW Women's Institute group is promising to be "jazzier than just jam and Jerusalem".

The WINGS group, which meets in Colwall, near Malvern, labels itself a more modern take on the traditional WI.

Its president, Jane Stratton, describes it as "an enthusiastic, intelligent and vibrant group of women, spanning all ages and backgrounds, offering fun and friendship to all the wonderful ladies in the Colwall community".

Earlier this year, Mrs Stratton and co-founder Anne Birkinshaw were chatting over a coffee about the resurgence of WI groups all over the country.

With this in mind, and using social media, and café culture, they started a campaign to find like-minded ladies who would be interested in a more modern Women’s Institute group.

Mrs Stratton said: "What happened no one could have envisaged.

"More than 70 inspired ladies turned up at the first open meeting held at the new café at The Stores in Colwall.

"A second meeting was held at the Colwall Park Hotel, a committee was formed, and the first official launch meeting was held on June 15 at the hotel."

WINGS meets at the Colwall Park Hotel on the third Wednesday of each month, at 7.30pm for 8pm and is keen for even more members to join.

"From bridge to belly dancing, we aim to be jazzier than just jam and Jerusalem," Mrs Stratton added.
