A bid has been made to save an historic Upton postbox which could be lost amid town's Post Office move.

The eye-catching Georgian post box is set into the wall of the town’s post office but there are concerns that the box may be disused and even removed if plans go ahead to move the post office business to the High Street.

Many tourists have their photo taken with the postbox and residents of the town have called for it to be saved.

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin visited both the current post office on Old Street, and the proposed new site at Sean’s News, and talked to local people about what impact the changes may have which will be fed back to the Post Office during the consultation process.

She has also written to the Royal Mail chief executive, Moya Green, asking for assurances over its future.

MP Baldwin said: "The Georgian post box is an iconic part of the town’s history and I know that many tourists have their photo taken with it when they visit Upton.

"Our history is incredibly rich and valuable and I would not like to see this post box affected by the moving of the post office.

"Often these little details get missed in the planning for a move, so I have written to make sure that the Royal Mail do their best to preserve both the post box and its operation when moving forward with their transfer plans."

The consultation period was launched in February.

The Post Office says it is proposing the branch’s move in order to create a modern plan, local style branch which will also boast extended opening hours.
