A QUARRY on the Malvern Hills has been closed to the public until further notice after a landslip.
The landslip at the West of England Quarry, on the flanks of the Worcestershire Beacon, was reported to the Malvern Hills Conservators of Friday by a member of the public.
Acting director Sue Satchell said: "We immediately put a temporary cordon across the entrance to the quarry. It looks as though there there is more rock that might come down, so it's very, very important that no-one crosses the barrier.
"If people want to look at the landslip from behind the barrier, that's fine, but don't cross it. We will be looking at providing a more permanent barrier."
Mrs Satchell said that the top of the quarry was already fenced off, and the fencing was some distance from the landslip, so there was no hazard to walkers on the paths of the Worcestershire Beacon.
The cause of the landslip is not known, but some have speculated that it may be connected with the recent heavy rainfall.
The West of England Quarry was worked from the 19th century to 1931. In 1968 it was used by the BBC as a location for the filming of an episode of Dr Who.
