FIVE candidates who are contesting a seat on the board of Malvern Hills Conservators have this week been saying why they want to be elected.

The vacancy in the Link ward was created by the resignation of Clive Smith from the board towards the end of last year, and the election is being held on Thursday, March 26.

Richard Bartholomew (independent).

"I moved from the Black Mountains 29 years ago for my work and chose Malvern to live in because of the hills. Over the years since then I have walked, cycled and run over many of the hills and commons-and love them and would be privileged to serve as a Conservator. I am a higher education teacher of law, so know the Malvern Hills Acts and their importance in protecting the Hills against encroachment. I have been a trustee of a national charity and understand charity law. My ecologist son Will keeps me up-to-date about the countryside and the natural world.

Sue Dalley (independent).

"I believe in reflecting the democratic voice of all those who use and enjoy the hills. I would strike a balance which “protects the natural aspects of the hills, as well as the rights of the commoners and the public” and would seek the views of the residents of the Link to guide me in this. I have years of experience as a trustee of charities, and as a school and college governor. I am committed to increase access to people of all ages, abilities and diverse interests. We have inherited the hills from the past; I want to see them available to the future.

Geoff Hirst (independent).

"I have lived and worked in Malvern Link since 1976. The hills are a unique asset and must be managed for future generations acknowledging they have a role to play in the regeneration of Malvern. The hills cannot be managed in isolation from the world around them. I have many years experience in project management working for the MOD on a wide range of projects in various roles at all stages from initial idea to final production. I am a keen dog walker and walk the hills every day whatever the weather which gives me awareness of the practical issues of interaction of walkers, dogs and cyclists on the hills.

Fiona Peet (no description).

"I have lived in Malvern for 47 years and have recently retired after nearly 40 years in local retail and commercial banking.

I walk and cycle on and around the Hills every day and am passionate to retain this unique environment, where we are all privileged to live. I would like to be actively involved in contributing to the management of the hills and surrounding area and feel I will bring some new ideas and skills to the board. My financial background may also help support some of the other committees within the board."

Jonty Radburn (no description).

"For the past 17 years, my family and I have lived in Malvern Link. I have never failed to be impressed and moved by the 'magic' of the hills and want to give something back. I recognise their importance, to the community; it is vital for the Conservators to balance the demands of preserving an important natural site, with the conservation implications for wildlife. I support equality of access, but not at the cost of what makes them so special. With 30 years experience within local authorities I am used to listening to sometimes opposing views and finding solutions as well as supporting a committee structure similar to that of the Conservators."
