THE headteacher of a primary school which is subject to a "substantial" expansion says it is an exciting time for the school.

Stuart Bill, of Leigh and Bransford Primary School, says he is hoping proposals to double the school's intake of reception and year one pupils comes to fruition.

"It's quite an exciting time for the school, and it brings us a lot of opportunities too. We hope it can come into action.

"We have a lovely community here so new students will be welcomed warmly.

"We are very positive about it and excited to see how it all plays out, but there is a lot of work to do yet" he said.

If the proposals are accepted, the school could eventually be taking 30 students on every year, as opposed to the current number of 15.

It would also mean that three extra teachers will have to be employed too.

The school is one of four across North Malvern which the county council has earmarked for expansion, as pupil numbers increase and a shortfall in school spaces is predicted for 2016, if action is not taken yet.

Mr Bill says although he hopes the proposals are accepted, proposals are still in the very early stage.

He said: "We will see if it's feasible, at the moment it's only in the proposal stage.

"Things such as room for the new students, the traffic on school runs, if there's enough room for them at the school all have to be taken into account during the proposals stage.

"It's quite a substantial move, as it's a big amount of students to be taking on, but we would still remain a village school and keep the lovely community feel we have here.

"It would not happen all at once, it could take several years for the school to reach the full maximum growth. Each year we would take a few more in, and do it in stages.

"At the moment it's such early days that we will and see how it all plays out."

The need for more school places is expected as more family homes are built across the county under the development blueprint South Worcestershire Development Plan.

Callow End Primary School, Northleigh Primary School and Somers Park Primary School are the others which cold face expansion too.
