THE new market in Worcester is performing 'exceptionally well' and has a 'bright future' say directors and stallholders after three months of trading.

The Angel Place market was relaunched on December 3 last year with new look weather-proof stalls following a £550,000 revamp.

Work, which began last September, included repaving with the cost being met jointly by Worcester City Council, Worcestershire County Council and Crown Estate, owners of CrownGate. Higher quality, flexible and moveable stands were introduced.

Dermot McGillicuddy of LSD Promotions Ltd said: "The new look markets in Angel Place are performing exceptionally well.

"The markets have been full since the relaunch through some very cold weather but it has not dampened spirits in any way.

"All of the traders are extremely pleased with the reaction to their products. The new fish trader Mark from Ocean Seafood’s who says ‘he sells out most days’."

Butcher Martin Thorne says he ‘has built up an excellent trade in the three months’ while Nicola Edwards of Feast Street, the street food specialists, said they had been ‘overwhelmed with the reaction to their stall'.

She added: "We have also received an exceptional amount of enquiries for private bookings which is unusual out of season."

Mr McGillicuddy said: "The public have been very complimentary about both the look of the new market and the good range and quality of the goods on offer.

"The main comments have centred around the look of the new stalls, the quality atmosphere and the friendly helpfulness of the traders."

From Friday March 27, Angel Place will see an additional market day added with a vintage style market complimented by a smaller food section. This will be open every Friday thereafter bringing a different offer to this part of town.

On Good Friday (April 3) and Saturday the April 4 the first of the new Worcester market festivals, The Easter Festival market, will take place.

This will be a craft, food and unusual market in the High Street, and Easter Sunday (April 5) will be launch day for the new Sunday UpMarket in the High Street which will open every Sunday from Easter.

Bank holiday Monday, April 6 and every Bank Holiday Monday thereafter, will have a rambling market held on the Quay, Riverside.

Director Linda McGillicuddy said: “ We are pleased to have been given the opportunity to invest and present a range of new generation markets in Worcester which is a city that is changing and adapting to modern demands. It’s an honour to be playing a part in building these changes and working in partnership with stakeholders who have an exciting vision for the city. The future really is looking bright."
