A TOUCH of supermarket silliness came to Droitwich.

Dave Davidson, a pensioner who usually shops in the town’s Aldi, sent a tongue-in-cheek email to Morrisons claiming that the chain’s customers were flocking to his preferred store.

He was annoyed that Morrisons regulars were “clogging up the aisles and filling up the Aldi checkouts” on his shopping visits.

This alleged exodus has been caused, according to the Droitwich man, by maintenance works to Wychavon District Council’s Covercroft car park, which people often use when shopping at Morrisons.

The email jokingly suggested Morrisons “should sue the council for loss of profits”.

But rather than taking the correspondence in the satirical manner intended, Morrisons replied expressing its “sincere apologies” and offering a voucher “as a token of our regret”.

Mr Davidson said: “I just like to use a bit of humour to draw attention to inefficiency or stupidity, whether from large bodies such as the EU and large corporations or small bits of officialdom such as local government.

“I never expected to get a voucher in return and I am actually a bit fed up now that they did not even read my email properly.”

A spokeswoman for the nationwide retailer said: “Morrisons takes all complaints seriously.”

Mr Davidson, who regularly keeps up-to-date with the supermarket price wars, added the council’s works on the car park seemed to be progressing “slowly”.

He said: “They’ve fenced off at least half of it for ages, making things very difficult for drivers and pedestrians alike.

“In comparison the free Aldi car park was recently repaired in a sensible, logical way that did not inconvenience customers.”

Wychavon District Council’s essential maintenance and re-surfacing work on the Covercroft is expected to continue until the end of November and the project has been planned into three phases, allowing the car park to remain open until completion.

No one from Aldi was available to comment.
