THE Commonwealth flag will be flying in Upton next year, as the town joins the country in celebrating the union.

The riverside town will now join other towns across the country for the Fly A Flag For The Commonwealth event, after councillors voted unanimously to take part.

Speaking at the town council meeting, on Tuesday, September 16, Mayor Peter Webb said: "Personally, I think the more we support the commonwealth the better, so I am in full favour of supporting this project and putting on a show."

Councillor Rosemary Webb said: "We have plenty of time to put something together, and I think we should celebrate the commonwealth , especially as it is now under consideration.

"We can do well with this project and give it justice. It's certainly apt at this time."

The ceremony is scheduled to go ahead in March 2015, while last year's event saw more than 500 Commonwealth flags raised throughout the United Kingdom, The Channel Islands and The Isle of Man.

Upton Town Council will be required to purchase the flag, at a cost of £69.60.

A spokesman for the National Association of Local Councils, the organisation behind the Commonwealth ceremony, said: "This event will bring together the communities and countries of the Commonwealth, in celebration of this great family of nations, its diverse cultures and communities."
