A GROUP of motoring enthusiasts raised £1,250 towards a state-of-the-art machine for treating prostate cancer with a fundraising skittles tournament.

Malvern and District Motorcycle and Light Van Club decided to donate the proceeds from their summer charity skittles tournament to the Rory the Robot campaign.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Kidderminster Hospital and Redditch’s Alexandra Hospital, is aiming to raise £1.6 million for the machine, which can be used to treat prostate cancer with much less blood loss and quicker recovery times than conventional surgery.

Club chairman Andy Ledington said the group had decided to donate the cash after one of their members was treated for prostate cancer at the Alex.

“We decided to help knock down prostate cancer one skittle at a time,” he said.

“We like to support local causes and Rory the Robot appealed to us because we have a lot of members who could potentially benefit from him at some point.”

Thirty teams from Malvern and the surrounding area took part in the competition, which was held over a number of months and was won by the Powick Nomads. Who defeated The Sausage Men in a dramatic final.

The club’s vice chairman Nick Taylor said: “The charity has benefited because we have raised money for it and the players have benefited from finding out more about prostate cancer.

“I would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition and all their supporters.”

To donate to the campaign visit or text RORY97 and the amount you would like to donate to 70070.
