A MEMORIAL cricket match to remember a Worcestershire cricket stalwart who collapsed during a game will return to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Friends and family will gather once again for the match between the Fossils and Brian Howorth XI which will take place at Malvern Cricket Club on Sunday, September 14.

Andy Howorth set up the match in honour of his father Brian, of Napleton Lane, Kempsey, near Worcester, after the 69-year-old collapsed with a heart attack while batting for the Fossils at the club on Sunday, June 30 last year.

Brian was born in Worcester to Phyllis and Dick Howorth, an England and Worcestershire cricketer, and played for Old Vigornians, later turning out for Malvern, Kempsey, Birlingham and Ombersley as well as the Fossils.

Mr Howorth, from St Peter's, said his father liked to encourage younger people to take up the games and the family were delighted with the turn out at last year's match.

"Dad was very much into bringing younger people into playing cricket and would have it thought it was great.

"The game is just about having a great time and everyone is welcome."

Last year's event managed to raise £1,000 for British Heart Foundation.

"Brian was such a kind person and lived his life to the full helping others, especially when it came to cricket.

"Last year’s event was a real success and many more players are planning to come out of retirement just to play in this match this year.

"It is hoped that this event will continue to grow for many years raising funds for the British Heart Foundation.”

Donna Stokes, BHF community fundraising manager, encouraged as many people as possible to support the charity cricket match which promises to be great fun for everyone involved. By engaging in events like this, you are helping our life-saving and life-changing work to continue. We’re fighting for every heartbeat but we can’t do it without you.”

Entry to the match, which starts at 1pm, is free.
