THE CROWD-PLEASING Welland Steam and Country Rally is to celebrate its 50th anniversary this weekend.

It was back in 1964 when the rally was launched by a handful of steam engine enthusiasts.

Now, based on its own 130-acre site at Woodside Farm, Welland, (WR13 6LN), it is of the largest and most respected events of its type in the country.

An event spokesman said: "The rally is a day of nostalgia, sights, sounds and colour for every member of the family as you take a trip down memory lane to the days when steam power reigned on the roads, farm and fairground."

Highlights this Friday July 25, will include parades of vintage motorcycles and cycles, vintage and classic cars, model steam engines, historic commercial vehicles, steam traction engines, and vintage tractors.

And highlights on Sunday, July 26, will also include stunning vehicle parades, plus an RAF Dakota fly past and a birds of prey demonstration.

At 9pm, toes will be tapping to an ever popular country combo, when "The Wurzels Play Welland".

The band is well -known for quirky hits including "I've Got A Brand New Combine Harvester" and "I Am A Cider Drinker".

Sunday, July 27, will see more stirring parades of vintage vehicles, including military vehicles, and there will be another birds of prey display and a tug of war competition.

Opening times will be 8am to 10pm, on the Friday and the Saturday, and 8am to 5pm on Sunday.
