KEEN sportsmen and women have been making a racket about their new courts.

Mathon, Cradley and Storridge Tennis Club officially opened the two playing surfaces, which were financed via a Lawn Tennis Association grant and club funds, at its site in Harcourt Road, Mathon, near West Malvern, during an open day on Sunday, June 22.

Gill Howard, a founder member of the club from the 1980s, cut the ribbon and declared the courts open for play in front of 35 existing and new members.

The club's chairman, Mark Walbridge, said: "Six new members signed up straight away and we are expecting the same number again to sign up this week.

"The day was a great success and we raised more than we expected to help toward our programme of improvement to the clubs facilities.”

The open day also included a raffle of more than 20 prizes, a cake sale and the opportunity for new members of all ages to brush up on their tennis skills.

The club also runs six teams for those with a more competitive edge and has three courts in total.
