A MALVERN travel agent has created a new trophy for the Beacon Camera Club to honour the memory of his grandmother.

The Ruth Handley FRPS Portraiture Trophy was presented for the first time at the club's annual award night held recently at Dyson Perrins CE Academy.

It was presented to the club by Lee Harrison, owner of Malvern World Travel, who named is after his grandmother, who lived between 1899 and 1957, and who was best renowned for the portraits of actors and actresses she created at her studio in Handsworth, Birmingham.

Mr Harrison said: "I never Knew my grandmother unfortunately, but i do have many of her original photographs and hundreds of her negatives from the late 40s and 50s.

"Many went on to be exhibited in salons across the world, and several appeared in the prestigous Photograms of the Year books during that time.

"I believe my grandmother was one of the first women to be awarded an FRPS, and was also among the first to develop colour slides and negatives."

The winner of the trophy in its first year was Colton Halls with his portrait entitled Ruby Jewel.
