WORK to improve Worcester Bridge has finished a week ahead of schedule.

The Worcestershire Highways project on the river crossing began in mid-May and was originally planned to last until Friday, June 6 but it was completed overnight between Thursday and Friday (May 29-30).

As part of the scheme, the footpaths on both sides have been replaced with materials in-keeping with the heritage feel of the structure which was built in the 18th century.

An anti-skid road surface has also been installed on the carriageway to improve safety.

Cllr John Smith, Worcestershire County Council's cabinet member for highways, said: "The teams have worked extremely hard and managed to complete this project a week ahead of schedule, which is good news.

"The historic Worcester Bridge is a landmark and gateway into the city. It was a real focal point during the floods earlier this year and the vehicles, including heavy machinery used to remove debris, did inevitably cause some damage.

"These works on both the footpaths and road both look great and improve safety for both motorists and pedestrians."

To keep any disruption to motorists and pedestrians to a minimum, the work took place overnight and timed not to occur when events were taking place at Worcestershire County Cricket Club, New Road, or the nearby racecourse.
