TWO brothers will be taking a very big leap in memory of a Worcester teenager who died last month.

Steve and Frank Bowtell will be leaping out of a plane at 10,000 feet at Hinton Airfield in Northamptonshire on Tuesday, May 27 to raise money for the Critical Care Unit at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, where 17-year-old Jake Wells was treated before he died.

Jake, a former pupil of Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College who was in his first year at Worcester Sixth Form College, died on Tuesday, April 8 after being rushed to hospital from his home in Great House Road at about 6.30pm on Saturday, April 5.

Steve, a friend of the Wells family, said his girlfriend Hayley had bought him the skydive as a 30th birthday present and he had later had the idea to use it to raise money in memory of Jake.

"I've never done anything like this before," he said.

"I went to Portugal recently and when I looked out of the window of the plane I thought that was high and that's nowhere near 10,000 feet."

He said the appeal had already reached more than £3,000 and counting.

"It was slow for the first day or two and then it sort of blew up and raised £2,500 in five days," he said.

"It's been absolutely amazing."

A number of events are being held at Worcester Sixth Form College this week to raise money for the Bowtell brothers, including a raffle, chocolate fountain, jeans day and sponsored leg waxing by members of the Worcester Warriors Academy, which is based at the college.

Head of year Julie Ferman said the response to the by students and staff, as well as businesses from the city which had provided raffle prizes, had been "incredible".

"It's really helping the students because a lot of them wanted to do something to help with their grief," she said.

"We're just hoping to raise lots of money. "

A fundraising event will also be held at Rushwick Village Hall from 5pm until 11pm on Saturday, May 24.

In a statement issued after his death Jake’s family remembered him as "a much loved son and brother".

Police said his death is not being treated as suspicious and an inquest is scheduled to be held at Stourport Coroner’s Court on Monday, June 2.
