GREEN-fingered residents from across Malvern are being urged to play their part in making this year's Britain in Bloom bid a success.

The Malvern in Bloom team are looking for keen gardeners to turn the town into a horticultural heaven and help it win the top prize.

2014 is a very special year for Malvern In Bloom, as, after winning six gold awards in the Heart of England in Bloom competition, it has won a place in the national competition run by the Royal Horticultural Society.

Cynthia Palmer, who is organising the competition with Maggie Williams, said: "We would like to encourage all residents to take up their forks and spades and to brighten up their gardens so that we can really show off our beautiful town.

"The local judges are always thrilled to be able to see the gardening delights of Malvern resident. There is no formal theme this year but the judges will be looking for colour, variety, visual impact and originality. They are also keen to encourage environmentally friendly practises such as planting for bees and butterflies, and home composting.

"More and more people who are proud of their gardens take part every year and, although you may not think your garden is worth entering, we are certain you will be surprised at the range of categories that will ensure that whatever the size of your garden, or whether you prefer to grow vegetables or display beautiful hanging baskets, your garden can be included."

This local competition is separate from the town’s main Bloom entry and costs nothing to enter. The six categories are: best front garden, best rear garden, best edible garden, best courtyard/limited-space garden, best garden by residents who garden with assistance and who may live within communal or sheltered accommodation, and best hanging basket/container displays.

Prizes are being donated by Waitrose. Entry forms are available from the Tourist Information Centre, Church Street, or Lyndsey Davies at Malvern Town Council on 01684 566667 or ldavies@malvern-tc.org.uk. The deadline is Friday , June 27, and the judging will take place on Thursday, July 10.
