A WORCESTER academy has received an architecture award after judges praised the elegance and intelligence of its design.

Tudor Grange Academy was among the winning buildings announced by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) on last night at the RIBA Regional Awards for 2014 at the Library of Birmingham.

An RIBA spokesman said: "The judges were impressed by the Tudor Grange Academy as a delightful, well-considered and elegantly crafted building. We felt the confident and intelligent approach to a sustainable design and use of materials was a reflection of the Academy's ambition to provide a responsible 'grown up' environment where students can develop and succeed."

The academy was one of eight buildings to win from a shortlist of 11.

 

The winning buildings are:

1. Ashperton Primary Academy, Herefordshire, Warren Benbow Architects

2. Centre of Refurbishment Excellence, Stoke-on-Trent, Purcell

3. Library of Birmingham, Mecanoo architecten

4. Parkside, Birmingham City University, Associated Architects

5. Stoke-on-Trent City Centre Bus Station, Grimshaw

6. The Lighthouse, Birmingham, Associated Architects

7. Tudor Grange Academy, Worcester, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios

8. Waverley School, Bordesley Green, Birmingham, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris

 

Speaking today, Gavin Orton, RIBA West Midland regional chairman said: “The range of buildings on show this year was very impressive. These awards demonstrate the value that an architect can bring to any project and I’m delighted that yet again, we’ve had such a fascinating and interesting range of schemes in this region."

RIBA West Midlands Regional Award winners will also be considered for a highly-coveted RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced in June. The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning buildings later in the year.
