THE moment Annie Perry and Isabel Swift said their "I do"s in front of friends and family on Saturday morning was not only important for the couple but also for Equal Marriage campaigners.

Looking into each other's eyes as they made their all-important vows at Malvern Registry Office, the couple said at that point they were oblivious to the fact they had made history by holding the county's first same-sex wedding.

In a small ceremony watched by 25 family members and close friends, Annie and Isabel, from Worcester city centre, tied the knot dressed in flowing white bridal gowns.

Annie said: "I was very 'in the moment' and wasn't thinking of the historical implications during the ceremony, it was a surreal and magical moment.

"Later in the evening we popped out to visit the pub where we first met and we were inundated with well wishes and support from strangers which was absolutely fantastic."

Family and friends joined the couple for a wedding breakfast at The Cottage in the Woods followed by a party at The Firefly, Lowesmoor.

The couple will take Isabel's surname and will change their middle names by deed poll to Perry.

Isabel proposed to Annie on top of the Empire State Building in New York last August when Parliament was still discussing The Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Act .

They originally intended to get married in June but decided to bring the day forward after it was announced that same-sex weddings would be legal from Saturday, March 29.

She continued: "The wedding was pretty non-traditional, we walked down the aisle together with our bridesmaids.

"It was laid back – we wore white but guests came wearing whatever they liked and we did a joint speech.

"We had a meal with gorgeous views with our parents, then drank long into the night with a fantastic party in a quirky pub with all of our favourite tunes, friends and food."

Annie and Isabel had their first dance to The Stone Roses' Sally Cinnamon.

Annie added: "The song itself is such a mellow, feel good love song that is all about finding somebody who truly completes you.

"It really was an amazing and special day, not just for us but for equal rights through equal marriage."

The couple were one of 13 same-sex couples who had notified Worcestershire County Council of their intention to marry since they were first able to do so on Thursday, March 13.

Councillor Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member for localism and communities, said: "I very much welcome this news and congratulate the happy couple on this very special occasion.

"Worcestershire is home to some of the most idyllic views and sought after wedding venues so I encourage any couple that's searching for their dream location to check out the venue guide that's available on our website."
