Community groups benefit from West Fest as plans for 2014 come together

THE team behind a festival in the heart of a village community have shared out last year's profits while looking ahead to this year's event.

A number of community groups and projects have bagged a share of £5,500 from last year's West Fest and volunteers are already working hard to plan 2014's instalment of the celebration which takes place on West Malvern playing fields on Saturday, July 5.

John Brook, chairman of the festival, said: "West Fest is an unusual music festival as all profits are given to charities and community projects; it is a totally non-profit making organisation with everyone working for the love of it.

"The planning of the event is now well underway having started with monthly meetings in January working towards the big day in July and running through to December by the time everything is completed and the grants have been given out."

Colwall Rotrary Club will use their share for youth projects, while Mathon Tennis Club plan to resurface their courts and Hanley Castle High School's PTA will use it for general funding.

Hills Echo will use it to cover printing costs, West Malvern Royal British Legion will update their facilities and both Arcos and the 7th Malvern Scouts plan to cover general costs.

St James' CE Primary School and Willow Children's Group plan to buy equipment and the West Malvern Baby and Toddlers Group will use their share for general funding.

The main and acoustic stages are welcoming applications from new bands and old favourites, with the Andy Dakin Memorial Stage returning for its second year along with the Oxfam-run cocktail bar and beer tent.

Children can make the most of inflatable games, face-painting, hair-braiding and performances from Pete the Juggler and more.

An arts and crafts marquee will exhibit work from local artists and general stalls will house local businesses and groups.
