AN amateur dramatics society is celebrating 65 years of treading the boards by performing a clever comedy.

St John’s Players came into being on February 15 1949 when a small group of enthusiastic amateur actors met for the first time and they have taken to the stage every year since their foundation - they currently produce two plays each year, with one on the Swan Theatre's main stage and the other in the studio.

To mark the special miletone, the players will be performing David Tristram's clever adult comedy, the Opposite Sex, in the Swan Theatre Studio from Wednesday to Saturday, March 19-22, having first performed it in Droitwich's Norbury Theatre 20 years.

It is a play about two couples - Mark and Vicky and Judith and Eric - who have something in common and a chance meeting could have made for a pleasant social evening.

Unfortunately, as they all come face to face, the common denominator turns out to be that they each had an affair with their opposite partner and it isn’t long before the air is black with insults, black eyes and broken china. The witty repartee and the contrasting characters combine to create an evening of adult humour.

The players return to the theatre's main stage in October to produce the Vicar of Dibley after being granted permission to perform episodes from the popular television series, with the royalty fees being paid to Comic Relief.

Performances start at 7.45pm and tickets are £7 for the opening night and £9.50 (concessions £8) for the remainder of the run.
