NEARLY half of people in the West Midlands wrongly think leaving heating on all day is cheaper than turning it off and on again.

The finding was part of a survey by the Energy Saving Trust which also found 30 per cent in the region incorrectly think computer screensavers save energy and 45 per cent believe switched-off appliances do not use power when they are left plugged in.

Switched OFF appliances, by definition, do not use energy when plugged in.

Appliances on standby do use energy, but it's generally not nearly as much as the doomsayers would have you believe.
