NEIGHBOURS have told of their shock after a pensioner died from a head injury.

Police have not said how it was caused.

Mystery surrounds the death of Monica O’Neill, aged 73, who lived with her husband in a quiet street.

Police were called to their home in Eston Avenue, Malvern, on Tuesday.

A man was arrested the same day, and later released without charge.

Police continue to make forensic inquiries.

Neighbours were visibly shocked and upset yesterday as they spoke about what had happened in their community.

One couple, who did not want to be named, said they could not believe the news.

Their children played together and went to the same school.

The husband said: “It’s just very sad. My wife is very sad.

We feel for the children.”

His wife said: “It’s such a shock, it’s awful. We couldn’t believe it when we saw the police forensics team go in.

I got up in the middle of the night. I saw blue lights outside.

I thought it was just an ambulance. We didn’t hear anything at all.

“It’s just unbelievable. I’m so shocked by what’s happened.”

Another neighbour, who said she knew Mrs O’Neill for 30 years and used to socialise with her, said: “She was a kind, generous lady.

"She will be sadly missed by us all. Everyone’s devastated about it.”

Another neighbour, who has lived in Eston Avenue since 1984, said that he knew Mrs O’Neill to say hello to.

He said: “It’s a bit of a shock. How it could have happened, I have no idea.

There were a lot of police around.”

Mrs O’Neill had three children.

Police said the man who was arrested had been released without charge while inquiries continue.

The Worcestershire coroner has been informed and inquest will take place.
