WITH the prospect of river levels increasing in Upton-upon-Severn over the weekend, Severn Trent Water has its pumps on standby.

New Street remains closed due to flooding from A4104 High Street and Old Street and with more rain forecast for the next few days, more flooding could be caused across the region.

Paul Acton from Severn Trent Water said: “We know that Upton upon Severn is likely to flood when the river levels get high and we know it causes a lot of disruption when this happens.

"We were expecting the levels to increase over the last few days and into the weekend, and we wanted to help protect local property from any impact.

“To help avoid any issues, we had our pumps in place on Tuesday, ready to cope with the extra water we expect to see when river levels are at their highest.

"We know that when the river does get high, the local pub has problems with the cellar flooding, and putting out these pumps now, to be ready for the river levels rising should help protect that property."

Mr Acton said engineers are working to monitor the pumps and river levels.

"We’re ready to draft in extra measures if needed," he said. "In extreme wet weather it may not be possible to prevent all flooding in Upton upon Severn, but our customers can be assured that we will do all that is possible to minimise disruption.”
