DRIVERS across Worcestershire are being urged to take extra care on the roads – with the wet and icy conditions set to continue.

Frosty conditions are set to continue aross the county this morning, despite temperatures forecast to reach 10C as the day progresses, according to the Met Office.

Patchy rain will also creep in across the county, making conditions treacherous for motorists.

Later, temperatures look set to drop close to zero again overnight reaching a high of 8C (46F) tomorrow and on Friday, with spells of heavy rain on both days as flood waters continue to recede.

The Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) has issued a warning for drivers to be careful as they head out this week, after dealing with seven crashes across the two counties on Monday.

Fire crews attended two incidents in Worcester and Stourport, one in Broadway, one in Redditch and one in Hereford.

Station commander Alan Haley, of the community safety team, said: “While we’ve had flooded roads to contend with this winter, there’s been only a handful of icy mornings and no snow as yet.

“However, we do tend to see an increase in collisions when the roads are icy and so we are keen to encourage motorists, particularly younger drivers who may not have driven on the ice before, to keep an eye on the weather.”

One lane of the A44 Worcester Bridge was closed from 9.30am until 2.30pm yesterday so that Western Power Distribution could repair a faulty cable. It followed Monday’s rush-hour lane closure, which led to heavy tailbacks.

The Environment Agency say the wet weather means river levels may rise very slightly today but the gauges at Diglis and Kempsey are below the peaks of last Friday.

No new flood warnings are in place but New Street, in Upton-upon-Severn, remains closed.
