AN international campaign aiming to end violence against women ends today.

Championed by your Worcester News, for the last 16 days the White Ribbon Campaign has been spreading a message to thousands of men in the county to never condone, accept or ignore violence against women in any form.

More than 1,000 people in Worcestershire have made that very pledge over the last two weeks and, while the campaign may be drawing to a close, its message remains as important as ever.

One of those who will be continuing to promote the cause is amateur film maker Mark Games, a sports coach who is studying at the University of Worcester.

He has turned the spotlight on domestic violence for his latest project, a 20-minute film entitled The Silent War.

The film is set to receive its premiere during a showcase of work by local writers and directors at the Crown Inn, Bransford Road, St John’s, Worcester, starting at 7pm tomorrow. Mr Games, aged 33, has used writing as a way of coping with his mental health struggles ever since childhood.

It was only when he started at the university as a mature student last year that he took his first steps into film making, after taking inspiration from drama students.

Mr Games said the film is about raising awareness of an important subject, not for any commercial gain.

All the actors and crew involved worked on a voluntary basis and Mr Games said: “My intention is to spread a message, not to make money.”

The event will also include a live performance from Worcester band Ronin, who provided much of the music for Mr Games’ film.

The campaign was originally launched in Canada in 1991. Since then more than 2,000 organisations in 156 countries have pledged their support. It has been given backing by the Worcestershire Forum Against Domestic Violence and the likes of the Worcester Wolves basketball team, the University of Worcester and Worcester City Council.
