Food bank's festive appeal to shoppers

SHOPPERS are being urged to buy an extra item on their trip to the supermarket this weekend to help feed the needy over Christmas.

Volunteers from Malvern Hills Foodbank will be holding a food collection at Waitrose, in Edith Walk, Great Malvern, tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

It will be the second time the charity has teamed up with Waitrose for a collection, with an event earlier this year proving a huge success and attracting 1,000kg of food in donations.

Foodbank volunteers will be compiling a list of items they particularly need and handing this to shoppers willing to help out as they enter the store.

They will then chose something from the list to purchase with their shopping and give it to the team waiting outside when they leave the store.

Volunteer Dot Hayes said: “We were most encouraged by the very generous response from Waitrose customers earlier in the year and hope this will be repeated next week, especially as we approach the Christmas period and colder weather.

“Much of the food collected has since been given out to the clients referred to the foodbank during the year and more is needed, particularly at this time of year.”
