Malvern woman in bid to support African community
A MALVERN woman has used the nature on her doorstep to continue her support for a community in west Africa.
Jane Smith, the founder and chairman of Just Act Gambia, has captured a year in the life of Malvern Common on film for a charity calendar in a bid to raise funds for a community in Janjanbureh, 200 miles from the coast.
Living in Longridge Road, Mrs Smith sees the day-today changes on the common opposite her house and the colourful calendar features scenes that include orchids, the Angel of Malvern snow sculpture, ducks, beautiful butterflies and tractors mowing the grass.
Mrs Smith was inspired to compile the calendar after the success of a photobook, entitled Malvern Common in Spring and Summer, which she used a simple digital camera to shoot.
She hoped to sell 50 of the books but sales has now gone well above 400, helping to raise more money for her charity which promotes sustainable tourism and community training.
Mrs Smith is aiming to support a newly registered youth group in the Gambia by covering their office and administration costs until September 2014 before being able to cover one-off projects.
The Around Malvern Common calendar is for sale at £7.50 and they are also available from the Malvern Book Co-operative, St Anne’s Road. To order a copy, call Mrs Smith on 01684 567409 / 07883103576 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
