Postal workers to strike
9:00am Monday 21st October 2013 in News
POSTAL workers are to stage a one-day strike next month.
Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) voted by almost four-to-one in favour of action over changes to Royal Mail workers’ terms and conditions following privatisation last week.
The walkout is planned for Monday, November 4. It will be the first time Royal Mail staff have staged a national strike in almost four years.
Seventy-eight per cent of union members voted for the strike over the changes, despite employees being given free shares worth £3,545.
CWU deputy secretary Dave Ward said: “We have offered the company a two-week period to reach an agreement and having already had many hours of negotiation, this is achievable if there is a will.”
The strike will affect 115,000 postal workers in Royal Mail and Parcelforce, but post offices will stay open. Shares in Royal Mail rocketed by almost 50 per cent on the first day of trading.
