Scout group in recruiting call
3:10pm Tuesday 8th October 2013 in News
A SCOUT group is calling for more girls and boys to join them in their adventures.
1st Leigh Scouts, formed in 1970, is one of the largest groups in the Malvern Hills district and moved into its present headquarters at the Memorial Hall Grounds in Sherridge Road, Leigh Sinton, in 1978.
Chairman of the group Sam Tolley said: “I am the chairman but I am also a parent and I have had a son who’s gone all the way through, and I think people have got this very old-fashioned idea of how Scouting is, but for me it broadened horizons.
“When my son was in school he wouldn’t get involved in the nativity plays because of the girls involved but we got him into Scouts and he’ll do all the shows now, dress-up and have a laugh with everyone – they get involved in a club like this and it just brings out their personality.
“My son and daughter have just come back from France with the Explorer Scouts and they went white water rafting, canyoning, canoeing – all the pursuits you wouldn’t get a chance to do without it being really expensive.”
The Beaver Scouts, for children aged between six and eight, meets on Tuesdays from 5.30pm to 6.45pm and the Cub Scouts, for children between eight and 10-and-ahalf years old, from 6.45pm to 8.15pm. The Scout group, for children aged 10-and-a-half and 14, meets on a Friday from 7pm to 9pm.
The Explorer Scouts are aged between 14 and 18 and meet on Thursday from 7pm to 9pm. Members can join for just £8 per month. For more information visit 1stleight.
